A PERSONAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Following a five year dream-guided journey, I have now completed my male-to-female transition with a successful Sex Reassignment Surgery on July 4th of this year.  My wife, Martha, family, friends, colleagues and therapist have supported me throughout this journey, a generous support that has made my transition possible. It is now time for me to own this new expression in my professional life and work.  I will continue as before: seeing clients in my office and online, facilitating Family Constellations and Relational Boundaries workshops, and teaching the skills and ways of being that are needed to facilitate this mysterious system of healing; now with a new awareness and perception that comes with this change.  My transgender journey has deepened my attention to gender relations, gender identities and the fundamental role of patriarchy in our culture.  I am preparing a series of experiential, in-person workshops exploring the dynamics of patriarchy.

While I have a more female physiology, this is not a rejection of my male life.  The Indigenous world names people who express both genders as “Two-Spirited”, an expression coined in 1990 by Anishinaabe Elder Myra Laramee.  I think of myself as “ambigendered”, i.e. having access to both genders, a bridge between both expressions; like ambidextrous meaning left- and right-handed.

I have taken the name Emily in honour of my maternal grandmother whose husband, my grandfather, died of a heart attack in his early fifties.  I respond to both Emily and Jonathan, names which both touch my heart.

Guiding Principles and Education

In a world where many, if not most, people are disconnected from their body intelligence and, with that loss, are also disconnected from their intrinsic soul guidance, I have explored ways of reconnecting with those intelligences.  Over the past forty years I have taken trainings and courses that have helped me provide a service to individuals, couples, families, and groups, so that they can reconnect with that body intelligence and inner life guidance.

These professional trainings have included Pastoral Counselling, Philosophical (soul) Counselling, Integrative Body Psychotherapy, Family and Systemic Constellations, Somatic Experiencing (trauma) therapy, Pre- and Perinatal Development, Touch For Health, and Brain Gym.

I have volunteered on, and had trainings with, the Suicide Help Line and Suicide Prevention programs and at the Sexual Assault Centre here in Edmonton.  I was a board member of the North American Systemic Constellations (NASC) and contributed to the Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion (JEDI) committee.

Important Influences for my work

For my healing work, the following have been affected me deeply: Carl G. Jung, James Hollis, Michael Meade, Bert Hellinger, Hunter Beaumont, Jakob R. Schneider, Guni Baxa, Francesca Mason Boring, Johannes B. Schmidt, Stephen Porges, Peter Levine to name a few.

I am particularly interested in the over five thousand year influence of patriarchy on gender relations and on bureaucratic, corporate and business, educational, religious, military, police, racist, colonial, and slavery institutions. People who have influenced me in this exploration include: Gerder Lerner, Valerie Hudson, Tom Digby, Manon Garcia, Carol Gilligan, bell hooks, John Stuart Mill, Peggy Reeves Sanday, Jason Stanley, Isabel Wilkerson, Albert Memmi, Franz Fanon, Aimé Cesaire, Walter Rodney, Eduardo Galeano and many more.
